Support for COVID-19 Pandemic

Are you self-isolating at home, wishing you knew how you could help during the COVID-19 pandemic?

Here are some options:

Volunteer to help make calls seeking donations of supplies

Our incredible Hospital Foundation has graciously taken on the challenge of coordinating our efforts to try to find donations of supplies from our community.  If you would like to help, please contact Pam at info@hgmhfoundation.org or call her at 613-525-2222 x4138.  She will set you up with the list of what supplies we are looking for and who we would like you to call.

Dust off your sewing machine

A lot of people in the community have been asking if they can volunteer their sewing skills to make items to support staff safety.  We know there has been some discussion about the effectiveness of DIY-PPE to protect individuals from COVID-19, and we are aware that these items are not as effective as standard PPE. At this time, we would like to ask for sewn caps and headbands only. We may expand this request to include masks and gowns in the future, but for now we are working to acquire stock of standard PPE.

The items you create do not need to be stylish - mismatched fabric and thread is fine. They  just need to be well sewn with no frayed edges or missed seams.

The fabric for scrub caps should be 100% pre-shrunk cotton and machine washable, preferably with a tight weave.  We also ask that you please sew two buttons onto the cap just so that it they sit just above of the wearer's ears - this will give them somewhere to hook their mask elastics instead of putting strain on their ears.

Headband:

The fabric for headbands should be 100% pre-shrunk cotton and machine washable, preferably with a tight weave.  Please add two buttons onto the headband  just so that they sit just above of the wearer's ears - this will give them somewhere to hook their mask elastics instead of putting strain on their ears.

If you are successful in your sewing endeavours and have items to donate, enclose completed items in a closed plastic bag and drop your items off at the hospital on Tuesdays and Thursdays between 1pm and 3pm - please call Louise Quenneville at 613.362.0031 on arrival and she will meet you at the main entrance.

We will launder all items prior to use, so there is no need to wash before delivering.  Please do not come inside the building to ensure you are maintaining your social distance.

Send Encouragement to Staff

In these times of worry and uncertainty, when our frontline workers must fight with all their might to stop the spread of COVID-19 and save lives, they need to know more than ever that they are not alone. Send a message of solidarity to encourage them to continue their mission as guardian angels - compassionately watching over our community and those we love.

Cheer up our patients

Brush off your artistic or writing skills - write letters or make cards or drawings for our patients who are feeling isolated from the visitor restrictions.  Share some happy memories, draw pictures, send your good wishes or some good news. We'll gladly accept items in both official languages, and don't worry - we'll hold your items at least 24-hours before delivering them to ensure any virus on the paper is gone.

This could be a great activity to engage children in as well.  Our patients have been receiving cards, drawings, etc. from children of our staff, and they have been absolutely thrilled.

You can email your correspondence to info@hgmh.on.ca, or send by mail to:

You can also drop your items off at the hospital in the plastic bin just inside the main entrance.

Help those who are high-risk

If you are not high-risk, and if you are feeling well, offer your services to the high risk population - pick up groceries or prescriptions for them, leave deliveries on their doorsteps or just inside the door.
