RNAO BPSO

Designation

Hôpital Glengarry Memorial Hospital is proud to be a designated Registered Nurses' Association of Ontario Best Practice Spotlight Organization (BPSO), officially achieving designation status on April 1, 2024.  The BPSO program supports healthcare organizations in implementing and sustaining evidence-based best practice guidelines that improve patient outcomes, enhance the patient and family experience, and strengthen professional practice environments. At HGMH, this work reflects our ongoing commitment to delivering outstanding care for our communities through evidence-informed, compassionate, and patient-centred care.

Since designation, HGMH has continued to build on the original five Best Practice Guidelines implemented during our pre-designation period while expanding our work into additional clinical best practice areas. Additional guidelines include:

  • End-of-Life Care During the Last Days and Hours
  • Oral Health: Supporting Adults Who Require Assistance
  • A Palliative Approach to Care in the Last 12 Months of Life
  • Pressure Injury Management: Risk Assessment, Prevention, and Treatment

This work is a key strategic priority for HGMH and aligns closely with our organizational PACT values of Passion, Accountability, Compassion, and Teamwork. Through interprofessional collaboration, staff engagement, education, and continuous quality improvement, we are fostering a culture of evidence-based practice that supports safer, higher-quality care for patients, families, staff and the broader community.

HGMH remains committed to sustaining and advancing best practices across the organization as part of our ongoing journey toward clinical excellence and exceptional patient care.

BPSO Champions

As part of HGMH’s commitment to advancing evidence-based practice and sustaining our Best Practice Spotlight Organization (BPSO) work, the hospital actively supports staff members, physicians, students, persons with lived experience, and committee/Board members in becoming certified Registered Nurses' Association of Ontario Best Practice Champions.  BPSO Champions are individuals who are passionate about improving care and health outcomes through the implementation of evidence-based best practices and this is a required certification for those who are leaders in the organization.

At HGMH, Champions play an important role in promoting awareness and uptake of RNAO Best Practice Guidelines (BPGs) throughout the organization. They help mobilize their peers, support practice change initiatives, encourage collaboration, and contribute to building a culture of continuous quality improvement and patient-centred care. Through education, mentorship, change management strategies, and engagement at the frontline and leadership levels, Champions help ensure best practices are successfully implemented and sustained to benefit our patients, residents, families, and broader community.  By investing in staff development and empowering change agents throughout the organization, HGMH continues to strengthen its commitment to clinical excellence and evidence-informed care.

How We Became Designated

In 2021, HGMH was selected through an international competitive process as a pre-designate Best Practice Spotlight Organization (BPSO) through the Registered Nurses Association of Ontario (RNAO).  RNAO develops and promotes the use of evidence-based best practices – interventions proven to improve health outcomes. Although HGMH staff have long followed best practices when caring for patients, new practices emerge regularly and must be evaluated and standardized. Over three years, in partnership with RNAO, HGMH implemented and evaluated best practices related to five areas to earn the official BPSO designation in 2024:

By putting the latest research into practice, reducing variation in care and eliminating interventions that have little effect, the initiative promises to further improve the quality of care that we deliver to patients. Visit the RNAO BPSO initiative website for more information.

Official Launch - 2021

HGMH officially launched their RNAO BPSO pre-designation status by engaging all staff in a curling-themed, fun-filled day.  Curling is a game of strategy where all players are equally important in the accomplishment of targets and goals, and so is this journey.  Enjoy! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vCKON6o9KG4
