HGMH Introduces Ice Machine and Reduces Single-Use Plastics Through Staff-Led Initiative

Alexandria,Ontario – Hôpital Glengarry Memorial Hospital (HGMH) has installed a new ice machine as part of a patient-centred and environmentally responsible initiative aimed at improving hydration and reducing plastic waste.
The change was sparked by feedback from hospital staff, who identified that many patients struggle to open small single-use water bottles. The new ice machine, and transition away from bottled water, will make hydration more accessible for patients while supporting the Hospital’s sustainability goals.
Unlike operational funding, capital purchases such as this ice machine are not funded by the government. The Hospital relies on donations and the generous support of fundraising committees to make improvements beyond essential services.
“This is a simple but meaningful improvement,” said Robert Alldred-Hughes, President &CEO. “It enhances patient comfort and accessibility, supports environmental responsibility, and demonstrates how staff ideas, combined with donor support, can make a real difference.”
The project was made possible through the generous financial support of the Alexandria Journée de la Femme Committee, whose contribution helped bring the staff-driven idea to life.
By eliminating single-use water bottles, the Hospital expects to significantly reduce plastic waste while continuing to prioritize high-quality, patient-centred care.
This initiative reflects the Hospital’s ongoing commitment to improving patient experiences and making responsible choices for the community and the environment.
