HGMH Recognized by Ontario Health for Providing Timely Access to Colonoscopy Care

Alexandria, Ontario – Hôpital Glengarry Memorial Hospital (HGMH) is proud to announce that it has been recognized by Ontario Health for exceeding the provincial annual improvement target for wait times between an abnormal Colon Cancer Check fecal test result and a hospital colonoscopy.

While the performance indicator may sound technical, the achievement represents something that matters to everyone in our community: people are receiving important follow up care sooner.

When someone receives an abnormal result through Ontario's Colon Cancer Check screening program, a colonoscopy is often the next step to determine whether further treatment or investigation is needed. Receiving that procedure in a timely manner can reduce anxiety for patients and families, provide answers sooner, and, when necessary, allow treatment to begin as early as possible.

The achievement was made possible through the collaborative efforts of physicians, nurses, endoscopy staff, booking and registration teams, laboratory staff, diagnostic imaging staff, and many others who work together to ensure patients receive the care they need without unnecessary delays.

For residents of Glengarry and the surrounding communities, this recognition means they can feel confident knowing their local hospital is performing above the provincial target for this important measure of care.

As of July 1, 2026, Ontario expanded eligibility for publicly funded colon cancer screening, making it available to more people than ever before. Individuals at average risk can now begin screening at age 45, while those at increased risk, such as people with a family history of colorectal cancer, may be eligible starting at age 40. Previously, routine screening for people at average risk began at age 50.

The expanded eligibility is expected to connect more than one million additional Ontarians with colorectal cancer screening, helping detect cancer earlier when it is most treatable. As more people participate in screening, timely access to follow-up colonoscopies becomes even more important.

Colorectal cancer is one of the most common cancers in Canada, but it is also one of the most treatable when detected early. Screening programs such as Colon Cancer Check, combined with timely follow up care, play a vital role in improving health outcomes.
