HGMH Opens New Spiritual and Cultural Care Room ahead of Patient Safety Week

Alexandria, Ontario – In advance of Patient Safety Week, themed “All Voices for Safer Care”, Hôpital Glengarry Memorial Hospital (HGMH) is proud to announce the official opening of its new Spiritual and Cultural Care Room, a serene and inclusive space designed to nurture the spiritual, emotional, and cultural well-being of patients, families, staff, and visitors.
The new room was designed with intention and heart by members of the hospital’s Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Anti-Racism (IDEA) Committee and Patient and Family Advisory Committee (PFAC). Together, these groups worked to create a peaceful and welcoming space that honors the many spiritual and cultural traditions within our community. It stands as a reflection of HGMH’s commitment to compassion, inclusivity, and person-centred care.
The HGMH Auxiliary also played an instrumental role in helping bring the room to life by generously providing the funds needed to furnish the space. Their ongoing support and dedication to enhancing patient care continue to make a lasting difference throughout the hospital.
“This room represents more than a physical space. It’s a symbol of belonging and healing,” said Robert Alldred-Hughes, President &CEO. “We are grateful for the dedication of our IDEA Committee and PFAC members for their thoughtful collaboration, and to the Auxiliary for their generosity in helping us bring this vision to life. It’s another step toward living our vision of Your Care, Your Way”.
Located near the Emergency Department, the Spiritual and Cultural Care Room offers a peaceful environment where individuals can pause for reflection, prayer, meditation, or quiet conversation. The design incorporates inclusive elements that honor the cultural and spiritual diversity of the community, including Indigenous representation, multi-faith considerations, and accessibility features.
Patients and families wishing to use the Spiritual and Cultural Care Room are encouraged to speak with their health care provider while at the hospital, who can help arrange access to the space.
The opening of the Spiritual and Cultural Care Room aligns with HGMH’s efforts to foster a culture of safety, compassion, and belonging, all principles at the heart of Patient Safety Week and the hospital’s mission of delivering outstanding care for our communities.
