HGMH Welcomes New Emergency Physician and Expands Services with Physiatry

Dr. J. Cochrane, Physiatrist, and Dr. W. Badaway, Emergency Department Physician

Alexandria, Ontario Hôpital Glengarry Memorial Hospital (HGMH) is proud to announce two exciting additions to its medical team and services: the arrival of Dr. Wael Badawy, a new physician in the Emergency Department, and the launch of Physiatry services led by Dr. Jacqueline Cochrane.

Dr. Badawy recently completed his medical residency at McGill University. Prior to residency, he worked in Cairo, Egypt as a locum dermatologist, and in Canada as a part-time lecturer for Occupational Safety Practices. Dr. Badawy is committed to supporting patients and families during their most critical times of need.

"I was immediately drawn to HGMH by its friendly and welcoming environment," said Dr. Badawy. "The staff’s professionalism, combined with a well-organized and efficient structure, made it clear that this is a place where both patients and healthcare providers are supported. It felt like a community where I could grow as a clinician while contributing meaningfully."

Dr. Badawy expressed enthusiasm about working collaboratively with the team at HGMH saying "I am excited to work alongside such a dedicated team to make a real difference in people’s lives. Collaborating with my colleagues to provide high-quality care, support patients, and save lives is something I am truly passionate about. I also look forward to learning from the diverse expertise within the hospital and being part of a team committed to excellence."

HGMH’s Emergency Department is a cornerstone of care for the community, and the addition of Dr. Badawy will further strengthen its ability to provide timely, expert, and compassionate services to patients and families.

HGMH has also introduced Physiatry services to further enhance patient care. Dr. Cochrane, a specialist with expertise in stroke care and spasticity management, will provide Physiatry support to referred inpatients. Dr. Cochrane’s practice addresses things such as neurological disorders, fatigue and mood disorders, behavioural issues, and swallowing difficulties to name a few.

The addition of Physiatry services represents a major step forward for HGMH, reducing the need for patients to travel outside the region where previously, referrals were made to Ottawa.

The program will begin with a phased approach, focusing on referred inpatients, with plans to expand to outpatient support in a future second phase.

"We are delighted to welcome both Dr. Badawy to our Emergency Department and Dr. Cochrane to lead the introduction of Physiatry services at HGMH. Their expertise and dedication to patient care will not only strengthen our emergency response but also enhance rehabilitation and recovery for our patients. These additions reflect our ongoing commitment to providing high-quality, comprehensive care close to home." said Robert Alldred-Hughes, President & CEO.

These new appointments highlight HGMH’s ongoing commitment to expanding high-quality, patient-focused care for the community.
